There was one major moment that was never given any payoff in the hit Paramount+ series Tulsa King, and fans are wondering if the show’s creative team may have even forgotten to offer an explanation. However, one of the show’s stars has suggested that this could be by design.
Per Taste of Country (via KDHL), actor Neal McDonough (Malcolm Beck) recently spoke about an unresolved subplot that was featured in the ninth episode of Season 2. In one scene, Kayce Dutton helped plant a remote-activated bomb into the fuel tank of the Beck Brothers’ airplane. The bomb never went off, nor was it ever even mentioned again. For his part, McDonough believes Taylor Sheridan included the scene as a red herring so fans wouldn’t be able to predict what actually happened next.
“You know, that’s a great question,” McDonough said. “I think it’s just that Taylor likes to have mental threats to the audience. And if he’s always got the audience on the edge of their seats, he can slide in something different that happens. I mean, shooting my brother in a toilet, did anybody expect that to happen?”
I think it’s just that Taylor likes to have mental threats to the audience.
He added, “To beautifully have my death between two guys in the middle of a field trying to figure out honesty and integrity and doing the right thing … he could have just blown me away right there in the middle of the field, but he didn’t.”
It’s certainly possible that the bomb scene was written in as a way of fooling the viewer. However, some fans may still be disappointed by this explanation. That may be one reason why the moment was included from a behind-the-scenes standpoint, but in terms of the storyline, fans are still left to wonder what exactly became of the bomb.
The Story Moves Forward
In any case, the story moves forward. After wrapping up its second season with McDonough, the show has a third season that’s now in production. Sylvester Stallone recently teased how Season 3 is going with a new look at himself looking dapper on the set. It was reportedly recently that Kevin Pollak had been cast for a major role in the third season as well. He will play FBI Special Agent Musso, a character who has an “axe to grind,” which could be a problem for The General.
“I’ve been an admirer of Sly’s throughout his entire career and could not be more excited to be a part of this stellar cast and extraordinary production,”
Tulsa King is streaming on Paramount+. A premiere date has not yet been set for the third season of the series.
