Following the massive failure and cancellation of The Acolyte, it’s claimed that Disney and Lucasfilm will be releasing only one Star Wars series a year on Disney+.
The Acolyte reportedly coast upwards of $200 million to make but happens to be the lowest-rated in terms of viewership and the least-watched Star Wars series on Disney+.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has also confirmed a whopping $4 billion streaming loss for the company.
What does the rumor say?
The rumor comes via scooper Daniel RPK who earlier in September said Star Wars will be reducing its live-action TV output (which fits with what Bob Iger has recently said).
According to what Daniel RPK told fans on his Patreon, Lucasfilm does have several Star Wars series in development. However, he said starting next year, Lucasfilm will only be releasing one live-action Star Wars series a year:
What does the Disney Star Wars live-action series schedule look like?
Lucasfilm had episodes of three live-action Star Wars series released in 2022 with The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor.
In 2023, there would be two series with The Mandalorian Season 3 and Ahsoka.
In 2024, there was The Acolyte, and in December is the premiere of Skeleton Crew, which looks to have two episodes airing in 2025.
There is also Andor Season 2, which looks to be released later in 2025.
Ahsoka Season 2 is supposed to happen, but will likely film after The Mandalorian & Grogu is finished. We can guess that means Ahsoka Season 2 will film in 2025, so that might mean Ahsoka Season 2 might premiere in 2026.
Other than Ahsoka Season 2, I don’t believe there are any new official Star Wars live-action series in development.
Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen did recently say they want Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, but nothing has been officially announced.
The Mandalorian Season 4 also looks to have become the movie by Jon Favreau that gets released Dec. 2026 with The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Temuera Morrison also said plans for more Boba Fett have been dropped.
Andor will also not be getting a Season 3, so maybe if Skeleton Crew does well enough, a Season 2 will be in order, and Ahsoka Season 3 after that.
Similar to Marvel, Iger has also said they are concentrating on quality over quantity, so hopefully just like the MCU did with Deadpool & Wolverine, Star Wars can be set on the right path.
