Star Trek: Picard’s Potential Legacy Spinoff Gets Hopeful Update From Series Star

During an Instagram Live chat between Stashwick and artist Jenny R. Johnson, Screen Rant’s Rob Keyes asked the actor if he believed Star Trek: Legacy actually had a shot at happening in the near future. “I don’t have a crystal ball. I know that David Ellison is a good man. He is the Skydance [CEO],” said Stashwick. Ellison is set to become Chairman and CEO of Paramount following its merger with Skydance Media and RedBird Capital. “I don’t know,” he continued. “I think he’s a Star Trek fan… That would be a question for them.

Stashwick added, “I think there’s always a chance that they could do a Legacy. It’s just not gonna happen this year [and] probably not next year. Terry Matalas is tied up doing other stuff. So they’d probably have to wait til he’s available.” It’s worth noting that Ellison was an executive producer on the Star Trek films Into Darkness (2013) and Beyond (2016), so Stashwick may be correct in stating that the future Paramount CEO is a fan of the sci-fi franchise.

What Is Star Trek: Legacy?

Teased in the Picard series finale, Star Trek: Legacy would chart the exploits of the intergenerational crew of the newly-christened USS Enterprise-G. Picard star Ed Speleers, who would potentially star in Legacy as his Star Trek character, Jack Crusher, told fans back in March 2024 to “keep being noisy about it,” suggesting that if fan demand remains high for the spinoff then Paramount+ will be forced to greenlight the project. “Everyone seems to want it to. We’ve just got to keep putting the noise out there. I mean, I would love it. I would absolutely love to play more,” he continued.

The Next New Star Trek Series Will Be Starfleet Academy

Paramount+ is currently gearing up to begin production on its next Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, which will begin filming later this year. The upcoming series, first announced in March 2023, will feature “a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy” and “navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

Holly Hunter will headline Starfleet Academy as the captain and chancellor of the titular educational facility, with Paul Giamatti cast as the first season’s main villain, “who has a sinister connection to the past of one of the cadets.” The rest of the Starfleet Academy cast currently consists of Kerrice Brooks (The Prom), Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), and George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything), who will all portray cadets.
