Star Trek: Lower Decks Creator Imagines Insane Solar Opposites Crossover

Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites are two animated intergalactic television comedies written by Mike McMahan, and they have shared multiple voice cast members. Recently, the creator spoke in an interview about the possibility of writing a crossover between the two shows.

In an interview with Collider, McMahan, along with writer Josh Bycel, discussed possible spinoffs, a series finale for Solar Opposites, and whether Korvo and company will ever cross over to the deck of the starship Cerritos. “Oh, man, I think they’d have to only have them talk to Dr. T’Ana because she understands swearing as much as the Solars do,” explained McMahan.
McMahan continued, “It’s too bad none of the Solars met Tomblr in the SilverCops story this year because they’d be like, ‘Wow, you sound a lot like Boimler on Lower Decks,’ because it was fun to have Jack Quaid jump over. They know Jerry O’Connell, though. They’d hear Jerry O’Connell’s voice coming out of Ransom, and they’d be like, ‘Wait a minute, we’ve hung out with you.’ [Laughs] But I think at the end of the day, the Lower Decks team would really like to meet them and get to know about them and respect their culture, and the Solar Opposites would probably, like, try to steal their stuff and f***ing ruin the ship and then have sex on the bridge and stuff like that. I don’t know how the mix would work.”

I don’t know how the mix would work.

Solar Opposites is a mature animated comedy series written by McMahan and Bycel that follows a family of aliens who crash land on Earth and are marooned on the strange new planet. The show explores different family members’ perspectives on whether or not this unexpected change of scenery can be a good thing. The main characters of Solar Opposites are Terry, Jesse, and Yumyulack who are played by Thomas Middleditch, Mary Mack, Sean Giambrone. The protagonist of the series, Korvo, was originally voiced by Justin Roiland, the creator of Rick and Morty who is also the mind behind Solar Opposites. However, after Roiland was embroiled in controversy due to inappropriate online conversations with minors, among other things, Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens took over as the voice actor for Korvo.

A Crossover Isn’t Completely Out of the Question

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated Star Trek series that takes place on the ship Cerritos. It is part of Alex Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek universe, which includes such shows as Strange New Worlds. Lower Decks follows the support crew –or the “lower decks” crew, get it?– of the starship Cerridos. The voice cast for the series includes The Boys’ Jack Quaid, who voices Brad Boimier. Quaid has also appeared in the Solar Opposites universe, voicing Travis in the fifth episode of Season 2, “The Rad Awesome Terrific Ray”. Jerry O’Connel, who voices Commander Ransom in Lower Decks, also voices himself in an episode of Solar Opposites. Between sharing a creator, as well as multiple actors, a crossover between the two shows is certainly not out of the question.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is streaming on Paramount+, while Solar Opposites streams on Hulu.
