During Doctor Who’s visit to San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Russell T Davies opens up about the upcoming season 15. The past season introduced Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday as his companion. Unfortunately for the Doctor, Ruby leaves his side after discovering her biological parents in season 14’s final episode. Despite Ruby stepping aside, the two swore to reunite sometime in the future. That reunion may be coming sooner than either expected.

In an interview with Variety, Davies spoke about how the Doctor and Ruby have been progressing since the season finale. He explained that next season will reintroduce the characters, and the show will even debut a new companion, played by Varada Sethu (Andor). Davies believes that it will help reestablish both characters by offering a new setting and new dynamics. Check out his full quote below:

We see The Doctor and Ruby in a new light, and with a new friend. Like you’re saying, different friends bring out different aspects of you .

Doctor Who Season 15 Will Redefine The Doctor & Ruby

Season 15 will also introduce Varada Sethu’s character.

Despite season 14’s recent ending, season 15 has already wrapped filming and is gearing up for a May 2025 release. The tight connection makes sense, as both seasons were confirmed at the same time, which offered Davies the opportunity to plan both together. The upcoming season will technically serve as Doctor Who season 2 since the Disney+ era led by Davies chose to restart the season count, though the show still retains its strong connections to its past.

The Doctor will still be facing off against the newly-introduced Pantheon of the Gods. Ruby is expected to rejoin him, but he will also be joined by Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra. Her casting was confirmed in April, but the details behind her inclusion have not yet been confirmed. The actor is best known for her portrayal of Cinta Ka in Andor, another Disney+ show that earned widespread critical acclaim. Sethu’s introduction will help change the Doctor and Ruby’s dynamic by giving them another character to play off of.

A trailer for the new season is likely weeks or months away, and it will not be the next release. The show will first return for its annual Christmas special, which was written by former showrunner Steven Moffat. Nicola Coughlan (Joy) will be fighting alongside the Doctor as she faces off against a Silurian threat. Joy is not likely to join the Doctor in his adventures with Ruby and Sethu’s character, though it is impossible to know so early. With the Doctor adding another companion, Doctor Who will certainly be changing the interactions between Ruby and the Doctor.
