Roger And Brianna’S Fate In Outlander Novels Analysed

Right at the start of Outlander season seven Roger MacKenzie (portrayed by Richard Rankin) and his wife Brianna (Sophie Skelton) made the agonising decision to return to the 20th century . This came after Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) discovered Mandy, Brianna’s daughter, had a heart defect that she couldn’t treat in their current time period.

Consequently, Roger, Brianna, their son Jemmy, and newborn Mandy journeyed back to the modern day to seek medical help for Mandy. Their departure was a crushing blow to both Claire and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), as it felt like their family was being ripped apart.

However, fans are wondering if this is the end for the family or if the MacKenzies and Frasers will be reunited once more. Those familiar with the Outlander novels will know that Roger and Brianna do indeed return to the past.

They enjoy their lives in the 20th century, complete with all its modern conveniences such as flushing toilets, electricity, and running water. Yet, as time travellers, their destinies seem to be inextricably linked with the Frasers, reports the Express US.

After facing numerous dangers in the present, the MacKenzies decide to return to the past, which appears to be marginally safer than their current lives.

In the latest Outlander novel, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, fans see Roger and Brianna make the choice to reunite with their family despite the onset of the American Revolutionary War. With the recent announcement that season eight will bring the acclaimed series Outlander to its conclusion, it remains uncertain how much, if any, content from the final two books will feature in the show.

Devotees of the drama are keen to discover what the scriptwriters intend for the concluding chapter. It’s entirely possible that key events from the last two novels might be woven into the concluding episodes, which could herald the return of Brianna and Roger.

Another eagerly awaited resolution is the enigma of Jamie’s ghost, especially after hints in season seven suggested Jamie possesses unexplained abilities, including prophetic dreams.

The shared anticipation was fuelled further by a clip which was previously posted online, where stars Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton exchanged thoughts with Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan on the Frasers and MacKenzies parting ways. Within the video, Heughan remarked: “So, this is the last time we get to work together.”

To which Rankin inquired: “Yeah. Is that sad or a relief?”

A send-off wave from Heughan ensued, as Skelton playfully observed: “Look how happy you two look about it.”

Rankin continued, pointedly appreciating the efforts of the acting and production partners: “I kinda feel like they have looked after us.”

Skelton echoed this feeling warmly, as they reminisced about their time filming.

The video hints that, at least in the show, Roger and Brianna remain in the future. However, this could only be for season seven, with the final series potentially seeing them return.
