Outlander’s Sam Heughan has taken to Instagram to share a moving message with his fans to mark 80 years of VE Day

Outlander’s Sam Heughan has taken to Instagram to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, also known as Victory in Europe Day. This day, celebrated annually on 8th May, marks the end of World War II when Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies in 1945.

Heughan, who plays the role of Highlander soldier Jamie Fraser in the popular Starz drama, shared his thoughts with his 4.4 million followers on Instagram. Using the hashtag “#veday80thanniversary”, he posted a heartfelt message on a black background via his Instagram Stories.

“Let us not forget the unity, empathy and compassion we found across the world, to combat tyranny, isolationism and extremism,” he wrote. “We are facing many challenges now, worldwide and the answer is to find our humanity again, for the common good of mankind.”

The Scottish actor concluded his post with a touching “Peace first. X” and added a red love heart emoji.

In addition, Heughan shared a clip from an interview with 103-year-old World War II veteran John Morris, who stressed the importance of educating children about the reasons behind the conflict, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

“I think we’re in a very worrying time at the moment,” he confessed. “I remember when I was in the anti-aircraft defence in London, and how London was badly blitzed.

“How wonderful it looks now, it would be a shame to have it all destroyed again.”

WWII plays a pivotal role in the series as Jamie’s time-travelling wife Claire Fraser, portrayed by Caitriona Balfe, was initially a nurse during the war before being transported back to 18th Century Scotland.

The popular franchise is soon set to journey even further back in time with the forthcoming prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Scheduled to air this summer, the spin-off will finally unveil the romantic tales of Claire and Jamie’s parents in two separate timelines: early 18th Century Scotland and the First World War.

In the meantime, Heughan and Balfe have finished shooting their final scenes for Outlander’s eighth and concluding season, which is anticipated to be released in late 2025 or early 2026.
