Outlander star Caitríona Balfe takes off the Claire Fraser wig for the final time in an emotional post. Balfe has played Claire in the popular Starz historical drama series since it first debuted in 2014. The series, which adapts Diana Gabaladon’s Outlander novels, returns with season 7, part 2 on November 22, as the adventures of Claire and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) continue. Outlander season 8, which will be the show’s final season, has already wrapped filming.
On Instagram, Balfe shared a video of her taking off Claire’s wig for the final time in a bittersweet moment that elicited both smiles and tears.
Balfe is surrounded by the supportive makeup and hair team she has worked with throughout the past decade of filming the series. She is jokingly asked who she is without the wig now, to which she says, “I don’t even know anymore.” Balfe also turns the camera to her co-star, Heughan, who helps bid Claire farewell.
What This Means For Outlander
The Beloved Series’ End Is Imminent
While it was already known that Outlander season 8 had finished filming, Balfe’s post makes the end of the long-running series feel more real and emotional. With season 7, part 2’s episodes still to be released, and plenty of romance and drama still ahead for Claire, Jamie, and the rest of Outlander’s cast of characters, the series does not quite feel like it is at the end. Seeing Balfe taking off Claire’s wig for the final time, along with her emotional reaction, makes the end feel real.
After more than a decade, Claire has been a significant part of Balfe’s life and has been a significant part of the audience’s lives as well. It is bittersweet to see the character’s time-traveling journey and epic romance with Jamie coming to a conclusion after so much time. Balfe brought Claire to life with a compassionate, brave, and vulnerable performance that helped make the character beloved and cemented Outlander as a hit series, making it all the more difficult to say goodbye to the show.
Our Take On Caitríona Balfe’s Video
A Bittersweet Video Paves The Way For A Bittersweet Ending
While it is sad to see Balfe taking the wig off for the last time, it is heartening to know that the show is going to have a definitive ending after such a strong run. Eight seasons is a rare feat at a time when many series are being prematurely canceled, and the television adaptation of this fictional universe will live on with the Outlander prequel spinoff, Blood of My Blood. As Outlander season 7, part 2 approaches, Balfe’s post helps prepare audiences for the bittersweet ending to Claire and Jamie’s stories in season 8.
