Scottish star Sam Heughan has posted a heartfelt message to his followers in the light of VE Day this week
Outlander’s Sam Heughan has taken to Instagram with a touching post commemorating 80 years of VE Day.
Officially known as Victory in Europe Day, the annual celebration occurs on 8th May to remember the end of World War II, when the Allies accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender in 1945.
Heughan, who portrays Highlander soldier Jamie Fraser in the hit Starz drama, has been paying his respects with social media posts to his 4.4 million followers.
Beginning with the hashtag “#veday80thanniversary”, the Scottish star shared the message on a black background to his Instagram Stories.
“Let us not forget the unity, empathy and compassion we found across the world, to combat tyranny, isolationism and extremism,” he penned.
“We are facing many challenges now, worldwide and the answer is to find our humanity again, for the common good of mankind.”
Heughan then signed off with a poignant “Peace first. X” and added a red love heart emoji.
He has also shared a clip from an interview with 103-year-old World War II veteran John Morris, who expressed the importance of teaching children about why the conflict was fought.
“I think we’re in a very worrying time at the moment,” he admitted.
“I remember when I was in the anti-aircraft defence in London, and how London was badly blitzed.
“How wonderful it looks now, it would be a shame to have it all destroyed again.”
WWII plays a significant role in the series as Jamie’s time-travelling wife Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) was originally a nurse during the conflict before being hurtled back to 18th Century Scotland.
The hit franchise is soon set to delve even further back in time with the upcoming prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Set to air this summer, the spin-off will finally reveal the love stories of Claire and Jamie’s parents in two distinct timelines: early 18th Century Scotland and the First World War.
Meanwhile, Heughan and Balfe wrapped up filming their last scenes for Outlander’s eighth and final season, which is expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026.
