The Outlander sequence was key for Jamie and Claire Fraser
Outlander star Caitriona Balfe had some strong feelings about a key love scene in Outlander.
The moment in question saw Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire (Balfe) sleeping together for the first time in a while.
The sequence took place as Jamie grappled with the physical and emotional scars of his rape and torture ordeal at the hands of Captain Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) at the end of season one.
The sadistic redcoat had tried to destroy Jamie and Claire’s love during the harrowing and prolonged assault.
Eventually, the pair found each other again. The intimate scene occurred when they were in Paris as they attempted to change history and prevent the Battle of Culloden.
Speaking previously on the Outlander podcast, executive producer Ronald D. Moore and writer Toni Graphia shed light on this pivotal sequence.
Graphia said: “It was actually your idea Ron that they have sex in here [the nook] for the first time in many many months.
“The thought behind it being that it’s dark and that instead of all that talking and instead of all the analysing, let’s just break it down: ‘You and me in the dark and we have what we have and we’ll never lose that’.”
She continued: “And I love that line that you put in when she says, ‘Come find me in the dark’, because it all boils down to that.”
Reflecting on showing a love scene featuring a pregnant woman, Graphia revealed the producers and star Balfe’s feelings on the depiction of this moment.
Graphia said: “We didn’t want to shy away from having sex even with her pregnant belly. We wanted that to be part of it.
“Cait felt very strongly that pregnant women are sexy and we didn’t want to hide her belly in the sex scene or anything like that – like a lot of network shows do.”
Adding: “We wanted to celebrate that and show that it’s part of their love. I love this scene and we weren’t sure which episode they were going to reconnect.”
While Moore shared further insight: “Yeah, it kept moving around in the overall structure about when their intimacy would resume.
“It took a while before it landed here and I’m glad it did. It feels organic to where the story is because now they’re operating more as a team.”
