Prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood will be featuring Lord Simon Fraser of Lovat (played by Tony Curran), the grandfather of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
Lord Lovat will have an important role in the forthcoming limited Starz series, however, fans may be unaware of the tense relationship between Lord Lovat and Jamie.
Moreover, there’s history between Lord Lovat and his son Brian (Jamie Roy), which is expected to be explored in further detail in Blood of My Blood.
Ahead of the new Starz drama, here’s a look into everything we know about Lord Lovat and his strained relationship with his grandson from Outlander.
Inside Jamie Fraser’s bitter relationship with Lord Lovat
Season two of Outlander saw Jamie and Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) meeting with Lord Lovat (Clive Russell) as they tried to get him to join the Jacobite cause.
Jenny Fraser (Laura Donnelly) was dead against the couple going to meet with him, telling them Lord Lovat would support anyone who would “help him line his pockets”.
When Jamie said he needed to, Jenny declared: “You’re defending the old buzzard now? Father must be birling [spinning] in his grave.”
Jenny revealed how they’d only seen him about once in their lives after their mother Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) died – despite being their grandfather.
“Father threw him out before he could cross the threshold,” she explained to Claire, who was left perplexed.
Jamie then revealed the awful truth to Claire: “He tried to have our mother kidnapped and take her to the Monach Isles in order to prevent our father from marrying her.
“There was some bad blood between Lovat and the MacKenzies.”
Despite the dark history between Lord Lovat and Jamie, the Highlander sought out his help to save Lallybroch and ultimately Scotland.
Claire explained in her narration how Lord Lovat had played both sides, showing loyalty to the English king and also to the exiled Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower).
She went on to say how his personal life was “just as infamous” with extramarital dalliances, including having three wives and that two of them had been “acquired by nefarious means”.
When they finally met, he insulted Claire and said how Jamie had “bound himself to a Sassenach” and declared how he was his “father’s son after all”.
He went on to say: “Unless you expect the boy to have more sense choosing a wife than did the b*****d who made him.”
Jamie hit back, saying at least he didn’t have to take a wife through “rape or trickery”.
Unsurprisingly, his misogyny came through after he said enough breath had been “wasted on women” and Claire was told to leave the room so Jamie and he could discuss politics.
So, there was no love lost between Jamie and his grandsire and viewers can expect to see similar sentiments between Lord Lovat and his illegitimate son Brian in Blood of My Blood.
As fans may know, Lord Lovat was a real-life historical figure, who has been woved into Outlander with details from his life spun into the story, including his devious deeds and shifting allegiances.
