The second half of Outlander’s seventh season is almost upon us, but the showrunners are still revealing some unexpected details about the latest adventure.

Outlander’s midseason finale concluded with endless possibilities about what’s coming next in Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) epic historical adventure.

As millions of fans await the Starz series’ return later this year, masterminds Matthew B Roberts and Maril Davis have been shedding light on some key moments.

Last airing in August 2023, the seventh instalment was put on pause after a gripping cliffhanger.

Claire and Jamie are finally sent back to their original home of Scotland, under the condition they bury General Simon Fraser (Angus Macfadyen) once they’re there.

Young Ian Murray (John Bell) also manages to join them on board, and the first half of the season concludes with a stirring vision of the Scottish coast.

While this scene was the most pivotal moment of the final episode, the producers revealed it was actually one of the very first things they filmed for the new season.

“It was very deliberate to pick this ship moment as the last moment,” Roberts explained during an interview with Starz.

“We knew we were going to break the season up into two. So we wrote to it to have a nice moment.

“And a lot of times with Outlander, as the fans and the audience will know, we leave them out on the plank. Like, ‘Oh God, what’s going to happen’.

“And I think we wanted to really leave them with a genuine upbeat moment.”

Although the Frasers experience their fare share of turmoil throughout the new season, the final sequence may have set the tone for the cast.

Roberts’ co-producer Davis shared: “We shot very early in the season.

“Like, that was actually the first couple of weeks. We shot it because we had access to the ship.

“So we shot that way out of sequence.”

Opening up on the significance of the scene, Jamie star Sam recalled: “When Jamie finally sees Scotland it’s a huge moment for him, for the family.

“They’ve returned, it’s his home, he’s a Highlander through and through.

“To see the mountains there and to know that he’ll be home soon at Lallybroch is such a huge moment, and a beautiful way to end the first half of this season.”

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Friday, November 22 on Starz.
