NCIS fans came together on a Reddit thread to discuss the show they love and miss
NCIS fans are disappointment that this particular element of the show has become less and less.
On a subreddit for the CBS police procedural, a fan explained the “one thing NCIS is missing.” The fan began their January 2 post stating how they recently have done a rewatch of old seasons of NCIS. That rewatch made them noticed that “the new episodes are getting farther and farther from focusing on the military.”
They elaborated how while the show still does crimes in connection with the marines and navy, “no one on the team can relate or connect to them after Gibbs left.” They added that this now makes the series feel like “another FBI show.”
“I really really miss when the episodes would revolve around our military service men and women, what they go through and how much they gave for this country-And Gibbs was there to relate and help them out because he was also in their shoes,” the fan concluded.
In the comments, many fans agreed to feeling that the show has changed that element, with some agreeing that the early seasons were better.
One fan said: “I had the same feeling with NCIS: LA. They were supposed to be special ops undercover. And they were, in the early seasons. But, the later seasons got so far from the original plot. I mean, they stayed with military, but also, Russian mob, and personal backstories, and for whatever reason, specific agents in LA were often needed in military zones that had nothing to do with what the show originally should have been about. It seems the NCIS universe tends to stray…”
A second fan added: “Some of my favorite episodes were from the first couple seasons when they were investigating while aboard ships. Mcgee sick, Kate & Tony trying to find their way thru carriers etc.”
A third noted: “I get it back in the early 2000s. NCIS was marketed as a brand new style of a show focused on military crimes rather than basic street crimes, and now, 22 years later, that’s fizzled out, unfortunately. It’s like season 17 with the Ziva and Sahar story line there wasn’t military involved in that but they kept it in the show keeps straying farther and farther away from the plot.”
Another watcher offered an explanation to the third fan: “Might be a reach but military popularity was probably higher in the 2000s thanks to a certain September 11th and the war on terror.”
One fan corrected the poster’s statement, stating the show doesn’t focus on the army: “None of the episodes revolved around soldiers. NCIS investigates Navy crimes. There are 0 soldiers in the Navy. 100% of soldiers are in the Army and NCIS has zero jurisdiction over the Army.”
To which the original poster responded: “That’s true. Sorry for the mistake. I was saying military personnel. Yes I know ncis has jurisdiction over Navy and Marines and they are not soldiers. They’re sailors and Marines, sorry.”
