NCIS fans could be seeing more of Mark Harmon.

Mark hung up his badge as special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 2021 on the CBS hit show after 19 seasons of playing the character on the original NCIS. Mark recently made headlines when making cameos on the new spinoff, NCIS: Origins, which stars Austin Stowell as a young Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Kyle Schmid as a young Special Agent Mike Franks, Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez and others.

NCIS: Origins gives fans a glimpse into life when their favorite agents were young and their development on becoming the people that they were first introduced to on their television screens.
A source told Closer that Mark has been “bored” during his retirement and could be looking on doing more cameos for the spinoff.

They said: “He finds working with his former colleagues a lot more stimulating than staying home with a list of repairs to be done. It seems his retirement plans have changed, and he wants to do more cameos on NCIS, in addition to the narration he does. Plus, he’s looking for other acting and producing work.”

Mark helped develop the show, acting as a producer alongside his son and contributed his voice for narration. This gave the story another added element of depth. Austin once told US Weekly that Mark offered him some advice on playing the very beloved character.

He said: “He was vocal about — maybe not what to do — but certainly [he was] guiding me more in terms of posture and mindset, things that I’ve learned to inhabit all the more over time.”

While Austin thought taking on the character was a “daunting task,” he did find support from Mark who he described as someone who is “welcoming” and “leads by example.” Austin added: “He’s really such a wonderful leader for us because he makes everybody feel so comfortable.”
