We’re used to seeing new episodes of NCIS throughout May. What’s going on with the CBS schedule this year?
May is usually the time for finales, and CBS tends to hold finales until later in the month. There’s a change this year, and it means bad news for NCIS fans.
There isn’t a new episode of NCIS tonight, Monday, May 13. This isn’t even a short break, either. We’re into the summer break now, as the finale aired on Monday, May 6. Yes, that’s a lot earlier than normal.
Why did NCIS wrap its season so early?
While CBS has set some later dates for some of the shows, the NCIS shows wrapped up early. This will be linked to the production schedule and the fact that there are only 10 episodes to this season. The strike action in the summer delayed production, leading to the show only getting 10 episodes in.
It is disappointing for those of us who adore the series. However, it wasn’t the only show affected. Ghosts wrapped up its series days before NCIS, and that’s a 30-minute comedy series instead of an hour-long drama. Other shows are coming to an end within the next couple of weeks.
NCIS Season 22 is happening and it will arrive in the fall.
There is some good news, though. While we don’t have an exact date just yet, we do know that NCIS Season 22 will arrive in fall 2024. CBS has set the fall schedule, with NCIS remaining on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
It won’t be followed by NCIS: Hawaii, though. That spin-off series has been canceled. Instead, NCIS: Origins will air in the hour afterward. Origins is the Young Gibbs story, which sees him joining NCIS for the first time. He finds himself under Mike Franks’s leadership at a time of heartbreak and grief as Shannon and Kelly have just been murdered.
We’re looking at a mid-to-late-September start for NCIS. This is usually when we see the fall shows return. We’re also expecting a full season order, sitting around 18 to 22 episodes since production should be able to start up as normal in the summer.
