With the seventh season of Outlander underway, fans can’t help but look ahead at the eighth and final season of the beloved historical romance series, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon. While there is still certainly much to take place within the remaining final episodes of season 7, knowing that the end is near makes each scene all the more intense. In late September, filming of the eighth season concluded, and a post shared by the Outlander Instagram account put us in our feels!

“Words cannot express the gratitude owed to each and every hard-working cast and crew member who brought this incredible series to life and every single fan who supports it with passion, creativity, and dedication. Outlander really is more than just a show, it’s a family, and while filming might be ending, there’s so much more to this journey that’s just beginning,” said the caption.

What will season 8 of ‘Outlander’ be about?

Being that episodes still remain in season 7, we can’t predict exactly what might go down in season 8 aside from the fact that we will continue to see Claire, Jamie and friends face whatever comes at them against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. However, we do know that it will consist of 10 episodes and will likely be based on the books Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, the eighth and ninth in the series.

When will ‘Outlander’ season 8 premiere?

Though filming for the show has wrapped, there is no set premiere date for the final season of the series. However, there is speculation that we can expect to see the show’s return sometime in 2025, after season 7 ends on January 17.

How is the cast handling the end?

While fans are mourning the ending of this iconic series that has brought us romance, tears, angst and joy for over a decade, the end of the show has taken a toll on the cast who has brought it to life as well. In an interview with Collider, Sam Heughan detailed the emotional goodbyes that took place as they acted out this final hoorah.

“The last day was emotional, but so were the weeks, even months, beforehand. Sometimes there were things happening or emotions where I’d be like, ‘Where is this coming from? What is this?’ And you’d realize, ‘Oh, my God, it’s because we’re doing the last season.’ There were days like when we did the last final read-through where I was crying, but then the next day, I’d be good with it,” he shared. “You make your peace. And then, we kept getting reminded, throughout the show. There would be these moments where you were like, ‘Oh, this might be the last time that I work with this person, or the last time we see this location.’ There were multiple goodbyes. It was so draining.”

Is Season 8 really the end for ‘Outlander’?

As much as we wish it weren’t true, season 8 will be the final installment of Outlander—but don’t pout just yet! An Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood, has been confirmed, and the story will follow the relationships of Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents.
