The power of friendship! No wait, wrong shows. Ahead of the Star Trek and Doctor Who panel “Intergalactic Friendship Day” at San Diego Comic Con, a popup of costumes and props has materialized at the convention. Showrunners from both franchises, Alex Kurtzman and Russell T. Davies, will be at the panel to “spotlight shared values of friendship, hope and fandom in an exclusive creator-to-creator conversation about the art of storytelling across time and space,” according to the panel’s description.
The “Friendship is Universal” popup features costumes and props from both of the decades-old science fiction franchises. It’s available in the Gaslamp Quarter until Sunday. From the iconic Starfleet Captain’s uniform of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to the familiar tweed and bowtie of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) fans will be sure to find a piece that hits the spot in terms of nostalgia.
More than 120 Years of Science Fiction Costumes Represented
Costumes of both older and newer runs of the shows are on display. Fans will find the familiar rainbow stripes of the Thirteenth Doctor’s (Jodie Whittaker) shirt underneath her trenchcoat. The Fourteenth Doctor’s (David Tennant) and Donna Noble’s (Catherine Tate) outfits from the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special “The Star Beast” are also on display. Sandwiched between the Thirteenth Doctor’s costume and Captain Janeway’s captain’s costume is Seven of Nine’s (Jeri Ryan) seen in the third season of Star Trek: Picard (next to Whittaker’s costume, no less, because odd-numbered space blondes gotta stick together.)
Other costumes include the robes worn by Leonard Nimoy as Spock in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, the familiar dark red velvet coat worn by Peter Capaldi as The Twelfth Doctor, costumes from Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) from Star Trek: Discovery, and even costumes from the most recent season of Doctor Who. The outfits worn by The Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) from the episode “Boom” are on display.
Check Out These Close Ups Of Fan-Favorite Props
As for props, fans of the Eleventh Doctor will recognize the beloved fez worn by him on multiple occasions (and at one point shot and destroyed by River Song) as well as the Cyberman head affectionately nicknamed Handles. There are also the TARDIS blue four letters addressed to The Doctor, River Song (Alex Kingston), Canton Everett Delaware III (Mark Sheppard), as well as Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) from the episode “The Impossible Astronaut.”
There’s also the chair used by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as a model of the starship USS Cerritos from Star Trek: Lower Decks. Odo’s (René Auberjonois) bucket and Quark’s gold pressed Latinum from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine are also on display.
Screwdrivers from Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Doctors are available to view, as well as the marionettes of past companions Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), Amy Pond, and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) from “The Giggle.” Clara’s portrait, illustrated by the Twelfth Doctor, as well as her costume that matches the marionette, are also featured in the popup. Of course, what would a display featuring Doctor Who be without the TARDIS? There’s also a piece of artwork on display at the popup featuring a collection of characters across both franchises holding props from the other’s universe in a true sign of friendship and unity.
The panel, “Intergalactic Friendship Day”, will take place on Saturday, July 27 in Room 6A. Again, you can view the popup at SDCC until Sunday, July 28. Stay tuned at Collider for the latest from San Diego Comic Con.
