What’s Going On With Rhaenyra Targaryen & Mysaria In House Of The Dragon?

An unexpected twist occurs with Rhaenyra and Mysaria in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6’s ending, setting up a big change to their relationship. Mysaria and Rhaenyra first met when the latter was still a teenager in House of the Dragon season 1, episode 2, as the Princess arrived at Dragonstone to reclaim her deceased brother’s dragon egg from Daemon and his lover, Mysaria. The end of Daemon and Mysaria’s relationship fractured as she became the secret-trading “White Worm” in King’s Landing, ultimately leading to Mysaria becoming a secret advisor to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen on Dragonstone.

Mysaria has grown into Rhaenyra’s most trusted advisor in season 2, as she’s now the only powerful female voice supporting and uplifting Rhaenyra following the death of Rhaenys Targaryen. However, Mysaria and Rhaenyra’s relationship takes a new turn in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6’s ending. After sharing an emotional conversation about Rhaenyra’s worthiness as the Queen and Mysaria’s tragic past, the two share a hug that gradually grows more intimate. Rhaenyra and Mysaria begin passionately kissing before being interrupted by news of Seasmoke’s mysterious rider, with the Queen immediately fleeing on Syrax and leaving their moment undiscussed.

Why Rhaenyra & Mysaria Kiss In House Of The Dragon

Rhaenyra & Mysaria Share An Intimate Moment In HOTD Season 2, Episode 6

Mysaria and Rhaenyra share a very intimate moment in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6 as they confess some of their deepest fears, past truths, and praise for one another. It also seems that neither of them is quite comfortable in smaller, more intimate and affectionate moments such as these as adults, highlighting just how much they trust and feel connected to one another. With Daemon and Rhaenyra’s marriage seemingly crumbling and Mysaria being the person she’s now most comfortable with, it makes sense that their intimacy could translate to a sexual relationship.

While Rhaenyra’s only confirmed sexual relationships so far have been with Criston Cole, Ser Harwin Strong, and Daemon Targaryen, there was plenty of subtext in House of the Dragon season 1 that Rhaenyra and Alicent may have harbored romantic feelings for one another. House of the Dragon writer Sara Hess confirmed that “there’s an element of queerness” to Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship back in season 1, with Alicent actor Olivia Cooke believing that the characters “at some point kissed or made out or had some kind of physical interaction” when they were younger.

Therefore, Rhaenyra being bisexual in House of the Dragon season 2 has already been built up in the show. It may just be the case that Rhaenyra feels she can finally act on these attractions now that she’s the Queen, Daemon is at Harrenhal and ignoring her, and she has the opportunity to seek what she wants. As Rhaenyra told Mysaria before their kiss, her attraction to Daemon as a teenager was based on his carefree and dangerous nature, and now she’s finally taking on these attributes for herself – which includes seeking a “forbidden” romance with Mysaria.

Are Rhaenyra & Mysaria Bisexual In The Book?

Fire & Blood Doesn’t Reveal Any Such Rumors

There’s no explicit account in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book that states Rhaenyra is bisexual, but there are some rumors that she was romantically attracted to Laena Velaryon. However, the only romances for Rhaenyra elaborated on in the novel are with Criston, Harwin, and Daemon. Much less is known about the sexuality of Mysaria in Fire & Blood, as the book largely only includes her history with the brothels in King’s Landing and time as Daemon Targaryen’s paramour. Additionally, there’s no indication that Mysaria and Rhaenyra ever kissed in the book, as Fire & Blood describes the White Worm as Daemon’s mistress of whisperers early in the war.

Could Rhaenyra & Mysaria Actually Have A Relationship?

Mysaria & Rhaenyra’s Relationship Might Replace A Different Book Romance

George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book doesn’t include a romance between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Mysaria, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t actually happen. Fire & Blood is written through the accounts of various unreliable narrators who may not have known the truth about Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s relationship. However, it seems like House of the Dragon season 2 is setting up a romance between Rhaenyra and Mysaria to replace the reignited relationship between Daemon and Mysaria from Fire & Blood.

Fire & Blood reveals that Mysaria sleeps with Daemon each night in King’s Landing, but the HBO show’s new twist suggests that Mysaria could be sleeping with Rhaenyra each night instead in House of the Dragon .

In the book, Mysaria is Daemon’s mistress of whisperers until Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing from the Greens. Once Team Black takes over King’s Landing, Mysaria becomes Rhaenyra’s mistress of whisperers but, as is the case in House of the Dragon, she technically doesn’t join Rhaenyra’s Black Council. Fire & Blood reveals that Mysaria sleeps with Daemon each night in King’s Landing, but the HBO show’s new twist suggests that Mysaria could be sleeping with Rhaenyra each night instead in House of the Dragon.

While it could end up being the case that Mysaria and Rhaenyra begin a secret affair in House of the Dragon, this may become complicated if Daemon takes a place at King’s Landing alongside Rhaenyra. Daemon and Rhaenyra remain married in Fire & Blood, but it wouldn’t be too out of character for either to take a lover given their own strained relationship. Their kiss in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6 might be as far as Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s relationship is taken, but it’s more likely the show will expand on a romance.
