Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has revealed the title of her final book as fans eagerly await season eight of Outlander to debut

Outlander’s author has confirmed what her last book is going to be called, but it’s not all good news for fans.

Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) love story, which initially played out in author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books, is expected to be back on the small screen for its eighth series later this year.

But much to fans’ excitement, there is also another Outlander book on the way, the 10th and final novel in the romantic drama series with its creator now sharing what it is to be called.

The upcoming book, which will bring Jamie and Claire’s story to a close, is entitled A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out, with Gabaldon making it clear in her Facebook announcement that “No, that doesn’t mean Jamie’s going to die.”

Explaining its meaning, she continued: “It’s not a death blessing, it’s the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous.

“There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me…”

The author then shared an excerpt from the beginning of her upcoming novel, teasing what’s to come.

The extract from A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out is set “post-wedding” when William enters, with only Fanny noticing at first.

In this final chapter, Jamie is clearly not as physically fit as he once was as it reads: “Jamie rose slowly from his chair on the porch—not using his stick, I saw—and drew himself up, eyes fixed on William.”

William arrives on his horse with both of them “mud-spattered, windblown and breathing hard”, as he tells Jamie “I need your help”.

Describing Jamie moving closer to his son, the extract finishes: “He reached William and put a hand on his arm.

“‘You have it,’ he said simply. ‘Come in.'”

Along with the title announcement, which has been made on Jamie star Sam Heughan’s birthday, Gabaldon made it clear that the book hasn’t been finished with no publishing date set, although she does know how it’s going to end.

What’s also disappointing for fans is the fact that A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out is never going to be adapted for television.

Outlander on MGM+ is coming to an end later this year, or potentially in early 2026 with season eight, with production wrapping up in September 2024.

So, however Gabaldon has decided to finish the 10th book, the ending will remain on the page.
