The holiday break is over, which means new episodes of NCIS: Origins are back! Fresh episodes return on Monday, January 27, at 10 pm ET after the flagship series it spun-off from, NCIS. The second half of the season accelerates the narrative that delivered some crucial moments in the first half. The show is not done with developing some characters’ pasts, and based on the logline for NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 11, “Flight of Icarus,” Franks’ (Kyle Schmid) past gets revisited, and an important piece of his family is filled in. CBS released new images from the midseason premiere, which show the team hard at work on their next case involving the death of a Marine commander’s son. Read the official episode description below.

“The team investigates the death of a famed Marine commander’s son, while a pivotal part of Franks’ past involving his family is revealed.”

Most of the images above feature scenes from inside the bullpen as everyone concerns themselves with one aspect of the job or another. Yet, it’s clear there is some tension between team members, especially after the revelations of the past two episodes. “Lala (Mariel Molino) is going to have to wrestle with and whether or not Gibbs (Austin Stowell) as a partner on her team is someone that she can trust moving forward,” showrunner David J. North said of the relationship as the story continues. Lala “believe[d] that he’s not ready for this job, and she really question[ed] his judgment” in the early episodes, according to Molino. One particular interaction between Lala, Franks, and Gibbs in the image above epitomizes the state of affairs between the trio as they stand in different spots in what appears to be a heated moment.

Lala and Gibb’s relationship in the next episodes will be a primary focus for the series as they adjust to each other and the lies Gibbs told. “…there’s a magnetic pole between them. As far as the story of her, everyone’s just going to have to stay tuned. I will say that by the end of the season they’ll know much more,” teased North. The showrunner also said that the studio and network behind the show “are in it for the long haul,” so we might see how this relationship grows.

Tune in to CBS on Monday, January 27, to see what the show has in store for the characters. “Flight of Icarus” was written by Jennifer Corbett and Gina Lucita Monreal and directed by Ruben Garcia. Catch up with past episodes on Paramount+ before new ones return in three weeks.
