NCIS season 22 is currently on its winter break, and now our eyes are on the chances of the future. Could NCIS season 23 happen?

“Knight and Day” – Things become tense when Knight is assigned to protect his wife after the home of a high-level defense contractor is attacked, on the CBS Original series NCIS, Monday, Nov. 25 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. We’re into the winter break for all our favorite TV shows. This is the time of year when we start looking at the chances of a renewal. Does NCIS season 23 have good or bad chances of happening?

Eight episodes of season 22 have aired. This is one of those shows that has been a staple for many over the years. It is popular in syndication, and even with the loss of its main character—and now no OG characters left on the series—it continues to be one of the most beloved shows.
However, we know that everything has to eventually come to an end. Is it time for NCIS to end? What could CBS think?

NCIS continues to perform well

I do suspect that NCIS season 23 will happen. The linear ratings continued to hold well, according to TV Series Finale. Sure, they are down from the previous season, but not in an alarming way and very similar to other shows on the network.

The show ranks seventh in terms of the average demo against all scripted shows on the network. It’s fifth when you look at just the dramas, and a comedy show and drama show will be considered separately for the network’s schedule.

The total audience average is even better. The series sits in sixth overall, and in fourth when just the dramas are considered.

NCIS holds up against Monday Night Football

Something that is going to help keep it on the air is the fact that it holds up against Monday Night Football. Mondays aren’t a strong night for CBS, and it was worrisome when NCIS originally moved to the Monday at 9 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. However, it’s continued to prove that it is a good contender.

NCIS ranks above the new Monday night comedy Poppa’s House in both demo and audience. It ranks about The Neighborhood in the total audience. It shows that people are still tuning in for the show and CBS isn’t relying on people staying tuned in after an hour of comedy.

So, with this in mind, I suspect we’ll see a renewal. The only thing that will stop it is if the cost of filming has become too much to justify the ratings.
