Of course, Jamie would eventually learn about John and Claire, but Lord John Grey chose the worst timing in Outlander season 7, episode 12.
Jamie Fraser was always going to have to find out about Claire and John in Outlander. Was Lord John Grey right in telling him straight away? Definitely not!
We always knew that Jamie would need to find out about Claire and John. Not only the marriage, but their night together was surely going to come up. In fact, Claire said that she would have told Jamie everything, but she wanted to make sure he had a bath and some food first.
You see, Claire knows Jamie. She is also compassionate, and she was just happy to have her husband back. They always promised secrets but no lies, and eventually, Jamie was going to ask about Lord John Grey and the nature of their marriage.
Lord John Grey should have known better in Outlander
Lord John Grey didn’t give Claire the chance to tell Jamie first. He knew that Claire would say something, so he needed to say it. The last thing he needed was for Jamie to get angry that John didn’t tell him right away.
The problem is that the timing was terrible. The delivery was even worse!
I get that by the time John told Jamie about the night of passion, he was angry. Jamie didn’t believe that John and Claire would sleep together, and then Jamie started to insinuate that Joh forced himself on Claire. There was no way that John would have stood for that.
John also wanted to explain that it had nothing to do with Claire. The two of them were only thinking of Jamie at the time. John had to know that this would set Jamie off. While we don’t have the full story from the books, it’s easy to tell that the two have a special friendship.
Jamie was relieved when John didn’t take him up on the offer to lie together in exchange for John raising William. John could see that relief, so John knew what their friendship meant.
John also knew what Jamie thought of John’s lifestyle. While they are friends, it doesn’t mean that Jamie agrees with it. Maybe if John knew all about Wentworth, John would have avoided saying anything about who he was thinking of, but he should have stopped himself anyway.
It was like John wanted to hurt Jamie, which didn’t make a lot of sense. It was like John wanted this violent reaction, which again, didn’t make sense.
There were better ways to explain the entire situation. Lord John Grey has more tact than his idiotic choice in the woods.
